Tortoises by Lewis

Tortoises

Did you know that tortoises are reptiles?
Today I will tell you a tortoise is a Reptile because they are cold blooded, and because they lay eggs.
There are three species of tortoise.

Tortoise walk very slowly because
of their heavy shells.
They have short stocky legs
that support their weight.
They mainly eat plants and they
eat all day everyday.
The tortoise shell is made of bone
and the tortoise shell has keratin on it.
Your fingernails and toenails have
keratin on them too.
Did you know the biggest tortoises live on
Galapagos Island.

Here is the picture to show you

  1. Wow Lewis, this is a really interesting blog post. Tortoises are very interesting creatures indeed - have you ever seen the ones at Auckland Zoo? At the moment, with being closed due to the Lock Down, Auckland Zoo are showing a lot of their animals through the webcams. It might be interesting to visit their website for more information. Tortoises often live for a very long time - I wonder how old the oldest living Tortoise is? Maybe that is something you would be interested in finding out. Thanks so much for your detailed post, you have obviously completed good research. We'll look forward to seeing you in today's online meeting.

  2. Hi Lewis, I am really pleased to see you have blogged the information report that you shared with me. I found it really interesting and now others who read your blog will find out more about tortoises too! You have worked hard to find lots of detail. I know that you also double checked some facts. Are tortoises your favourite animal?
    Thanks for sharing

  3. Hi Lewis,
Your tortoise information is very interesting. My friend, Bethany, is in isolation at Regent's Park College in the United Kingdom. One of her new tasks (that is not part of her usual job) is to help look after their mascot, a tortoise named Emmanuelle. I don't know how old Emmanuelle is, but here is a link to the story about why she had a name change. http://www.rpc.ox.ac.uk/about-regents/history/emmanuelle/

  4. Hi Lewis, I never knew that a tortois shell has keratin in it! It does make sense though, as I know keratin is fibrous and adds the strenght to things it is found in. I have learnt something new today. Thank you for sharing.
Why did you choose a tortois to study? I find them fascinating and I wondered if you do too.
As term two progresses, I would love to see more of your learning as you work from home, until we are all back at school again.
Stay safe and well in your bubble.

  5. Hi Lewis.
Wow, I learnt heaps about tortoises. One of the facts you shared was there are three species. I didn't know that! One of my friends has visited the Galapagos Islands. She said it was really amazing. Maybe one day you might visit there and find out more about this particular tortoise.

I have a story link below about a tortoise called Torty. This is linked to ANZAC Day.
The adventures of Torty, the tortoise started in Greece during the First World War when she was rescued by Stewart, a New Zealand stretcher-bearer.

(Lewis, you probably will have to highlight and copy the link, then paste it into your browser to listen to the story.)
